RED X PARC

At RED Horticulture, we are pioneers in the field of photobiology with the sole purpose of advancing horticulture to the next level. This ambition inspired the creation of PARC, RED’s Center for Research in Photobiology and Agronomy. PARC is a unique laboratory entirely devoted to understanding how plants respond to light in order to create impactful solutions to aid growers all over the world.

“Our goal to find out how high wire crops respond to dynamic lighting in order to boost growth and yield while minimizing energy consumption"

Raphaël Quenum

PARC: RED Horticulture’s Center for Research in Photobiology and Agronomy.

At PARC, a team of agronomists, engineers and photobiologists bridges the gap between growers’ needs and research, ensuring that every discovery has practical value for horticulture. Four dedicated research rooms allow us to work across a wide range of crops, from ornamentals and young plants to high-wire vegetables. Since 2022, the center has already carried out close to forty trials, each designed to create targeted lighting strategies that improve both plant performance and production efficiency.

High wire trials

Among these programs is our research on high-wire cucumbers, which lasted three years to test every environment and circumstance. The objective was to better understand how different light spectra influence plant morphology, growth and especially yield. This work traces back to 2019, when growers observed that the market-standard fixed spectrum (5% blue, 5% white, 90% red) produced weak, yellowing cucumber plants, especially during the darkest months. Leaves curled and showed signs of light avoidance, limiting crop potential.

In contrast, dynamic lighting strategies, where the spectrum is adjusted over the course of the day, have shown remarkable improvements. By increasing the proportion of blue and far-red light, relative to red top light, plant architecture becomes more compact, leaves spread flat to capture available light and overall vigor improves significantly. Over multiple years of trials, this approach has delivered harvest increases exceeding 20% compared to conventional fixed-spectrum lighting, not with higher energy use, but with less.

MyRED, RED’s patented software

Thanks to RED’s patented software, MyRED™, energy is applied more intelligently, reducing consumption while enhancing crop performance. This principle of combining higher yields with greater efficiency is taken even further with our Smart Dimming technology.

These results highlight a crucial insight: plant morphology is decisive in achieving high and consistent yields. By tailoring light recipes to optimize crop architecture, PARC researchers are helping growers unlock higher performance while reducing energy consumption. Cucumbers, highly sensitive to light quality, illustrate just how powerful dynamic lighting can be.

"MyRED is a game changer when it comes to lighting management, leveraging the power of photobiology to save energy and time for the grower while automatically fitting the crops’ needs."

Seamless integration from PARC to grower

What makes RED Horticulture’s approach unique is that these insights don’t remain in the lab. Thanks to MyRED™, growers can directly apply the results of PARC’s cucumber trials to their own greenhouses in just a few clicks. Light programs designed by our photobiologists are exported from PARC and seamlessly imported to production sites.

MyRED then automatically adjusts the spectrum of the luminaires in real time, relying on RED mesh radio communication and setpoints defined through our agronomy knowledge and plant modeling. This saves growers valuable time while ensuring crops receive the right light at the right time.

Discover RED T lighting

RED T series

This is only possible thanks to our patented design enabling dynamic control of four LED channels. By carefully selecting LEDs, optimizing the ratio of blue, red, far-red and white light and integrating new optical plates, we ensure light is directed efficiently and evenly across the crop. This combination delivers high performance, reduces power consumption and excellent homogeneity, every plant gets the light it needs, wherever it is in the greenhouse.

Together hardware, software and agronomy form the foundation of RED Horticulture’s solution: a system that not only improves plant performance but also automates tasks, secures growers’ objectives and maximizes efficiency. And with features such as Smart Dimming, automation goes one step further, delivering additional savings and higher yields without requiring the grower’s constant intervention.

At the heart of this research and technology lies a simple commitment: to give growers tools that translate advanced photobiology into real-world results. Through PARC and MyRED, RED Horticulture continues to build a unique library of scientifically tested lighting recipes designed to deliver crop optimization and measurable energy savings for modern horticulture.
